Old secrets, a Hollywood legend and murder. . . .

It's 1960. Nora Bates, a silent-film star known as "Lil' Screamer", is publishing her memoirs loaded with old Hollywood's dirty little secrets, unless someone freeze-frames her in a final silent scream.

Yancy Dunkle, a chauffeur for Nora's publisher, can hardly refuse when his boss requests he drive the actress to Palm Springs for the book launch. But he soon wishes he had. Even before the glitter of Tinseltown fades in the rearview, Nora's madcap, reclusive world crumbles. Nora is in hysterics, but friends dismiss her neurotic fears. Rallying to her side, they persuade Nora to proceed with her plans. But when two of her allies inexplicably collapse, Yancy is unsure if he's not becoming as paranoid as the movie star. Perhaps Nora's claim someone's trying to kill her isn't all that farfetched.

Yancy resolves to discover the truth as a kaleidoscope of intrigue and deceit swirls about him. Whispers and finger-pointing abound when Colossal Studios reunites for the gala. But when disaster strikes, no caption cards explain the villain's evil actions or motives. Armed only with intuition and reckless disregard for his safety, Yancy pursues elusive clues while battling an unknown foe as the reel unwinds to the final melodramatic scene.

One time silent screen star Nora Bates is about to publish her memoirs, and someone doesn't like the idea. First, there's the poison pen letter, warning her not to. And she believes someone is trying to murder her, or is she imagining it? Two people are drugged, and when Nora, who can't swim, falls into a swimming pool, she insists someone pushed her. Her publisher, Joseph Fitzroy, hires chauffeur Yancy Dunkle to drive her to the book's launching in Palm Springs and, while he's at it, keep her out of mischief's way. But Yancy has his own mystery--an amnesia victim, he doesn't know who he is.

This is a froth of a book, no more substantial than a glass of cold champagne, and nearly as intoxicating. It will especially appeal to movie fans of a certain age (the book is set in Los Angeles and Palm Springs circa 1960), especially those predisposed toward a little Hollywood gossip (with a few names changed to protect the not-so-innocent). The plot is convoluted but sorts itself out in due time, the cast of characters is large, including cameo appearances by lots of real movie stars of the time, a gaggle of drag queens, a midget and lots more.

A perfect book to read on the beach or on a long flight.

This mystery from James Huskins is filled with fun. I was drawn into the world of Yancy Dunkle and kept guessing the outcome all the way to the final scene. Huskins' characters are delightful and his descriptions gorgeous. I can't wait until the next in the series.
This mystery was fresh, engaging, humorous, witty and delightful! I couldn't decide which character I liked best, they were all so nifty! I loved the author's descriptions, dialogue and ability to keep me guessing. The time setting added to the charm, and a surprise twist only enhanced the story. I am looking forward to the sequel!
What a ride SILENT SCREAM turned out to be! Huskins writes scenes so vividly, the reader is immersed in the world he created. Twists and turns on a classic theme will enchant readers of mysteries both classic and contemporary. How groovy is that? I'm looking forward to the next Groovy Mystery Caper.
Huskins brings us a different kind of hero in Yancy Dunkle. With a cast of characters that are sure to entertain, this first book in the "Groovy" series begs for a sequel! Expect to have fun, and then some!

This was a lot of fun - the written equivalent of a good popcorn movie ) Great characterization of the eccentric, aging starlets out in hollywood, and you can't help but like the chauffer, who is having as much fun getting to play detective as he does driving the rolls royce. It's a great period peice, and I'm looking forward to seeing another book with Yancy as the 'star'.
Quite honestly, I bought this book on a lark. I was looking at other mystery series I collect, and this was a suggested read, so I read the description, liked the plot, and figured I'd give it a try.

Boy, am I glad I did!

This was a fantastic read - once I started, I couldn't put it down - literally! I got caught up with trying to figure out who did it, and with all the suspects, that was certainly no small feat. Yet, Huskins manages to keep the interest with unique, fun, over-the-top sometimes characters (really - Nora Bates, c'mon! I loved it!), a nice subplot with the main character's missing past, and a great reveal at the end (with a twist that I readily admit I did not see coming!).

It was also great to read a period piece - all the 60s references made me smile repeatedly!

It was great fun, which is really missing from a lot of my reads this day, so it was nice to actually smile as I read. I am anxiously looking forward to Huskins' next book, and I would strongly urge anyone who likes a good mystery to check this one out!
It's 1960 and old Hollywood is suddenly fresh again, thanks to Nora Bates. The aging, reclusive former starlet of Colossal Studios has published her tell-all memoir of old Hollywood stars and starlets. It's about to launch, but someone doesn't want it get released.

Enter Yancy Dunkle, the narrator and amateur sleuth of "Silent Scream." He's also the driver of the publisher of Nora's book. Yancy has been given the task to drive Nora and her her friends to Palm Springs for a week, where there'll plenty of time for photo-ops, cocktails, catching up, and murder before the unveiling of Nora's book. After a poison-pen letter, Nora is certain someone is out to kill her. As more strange things start to happen, she's even more convinced.

Everyone from old Hollywood has secrets and Yancy does, too. While snooping around to find evidence of why someone close to Nora was murdered, Yancy inadvertently becomes the prime suspect. He's only got less than a week to clear his name, find the real killer, and hope that his own past doesn't get discovered. Can this driver turned detective do it in time, before the week is up and the real murderer gets away?

This is a romp of a good time! I stayed up all night reading this once I started. While it could use a bit more editing (a few misspelled words, excess words and exclamation points, and cliches) it in NO way distracts from the great story that James Huskins has written. The characters are rich and alive, each with their own distinct personality. The setting of the story, Palm Springs, is beautiful and James captures it perfectly, making you think you're actually there. Who can resist a book where Joan Crawford, Bette Davis, and drag queens show up? 5 stars - all the way!
